Lettuce Wraps
This could be an easy casual night dinner or you could serve it as an appetizer. The hoisin sauce is a must so, if you can't find gluten-free hoisin sauce, I've included the ingredients for Gwyneth Paltrow's gluten-free hoisin sauce recipe from her cookbook, It's All Good.
Equipment
- 1 Large Skillet/Frying Pan
- 1 Small Saucepan for hoisin sauce
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp. Oil
- 1 Medium Yellow Onion
- 2 Cloves Crushed Garlic or 1 tsp chopped garlic
- 1 lb. Ground Turkey
- 2 Large Carrots
- ¼ Cup Hoisin Sauce gluten free
- 2 Tbsp. Grated Ginger or 2 tsp. minced ginger
- 1 Tbsp. Tamari gluten free
- 1 Tbsp. Rice Vinegar
- 1 Tbsp. Epicure's Asian Stir-Fry Seasoning (optional)
- 3 Green Onions
- Butter Lettuce or Romaine
Gluten-free Hoisin Sauce
- ½ Tbsp. Oil
- 1 Clove Crushed Garlic or ½ tsp chopped garlic
- ¼ tsp Chinese Five-Spice Powder Epicure brand
- 1 Tbsp. Rice Vinegar
- ¼ Cup Miso Paste
- ¼ Cup Maple Syrup
Instructions
- If you don't have store-bought hoisin sauce, start with making fresh, home-made sauce.Heat oil in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add the garlic and five-spice powder and cook for about 30 seconds.Add in the rice vinegar, miso paste and maple syrup and stir/whisk to mix thoroughly.Bring to a boil and continue stirring for 3-4 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.Remove from heat and set aside.
- Dice yellow onion. Peel carrots and chop into ¼ inch pieces.
- Heat oil in large frying pan on medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until slightly brown (approx. 2 minutes).
- Add ground turkey to the frying pan and cook about 5-7 minutes. Then add carrots and cook for another 5 minutes. until the turkey is thoroughly cooked.
- While turkey and carrots are cooking, wash the lettuce leaves and chop the green onions.
- Add hoisin, ginger, tamari, rice vinegar and green onions to the frying pan, stir until thoroughly mixed.
- Spoon turkey mixture into lettuce leaves and serve.
